Behind the board

A score you can follow.

Each score describes this regular season so far. Scores read like review scores: about 73 is a league-average performance, around 70 is the line between good and not, 90 and above is excellent and the 30s and below are very poor. The % sign shows a score out of 100, not a chance of winning.

Overall

Half win percentage, with ties counting as half a win, and half scoring margin adjusted for the strength of the opponents played.

Offense

40% points per game, 25% net yards per play, 20% team passer rating and 15% third-down conversion rate, each graded against recent NFL seasons.

Defense

60% points allowed per game, where fewer is better, 25% takeaways per game and 15% sacks per game, each graded against recent NFL seasons.

Method details and limitations

Each offense and defense stat is graded against the average and the team-to-team spread of the 2021 to 2025 regular seasons. Before the curve, a stat grade of 50 is an average NFL unit, and a team's grade does not move when other teams play. Early in the season each grade is pulled toward 50, as if the team had played two more average games, and every grade is kept between 0 and 100. A team missing one offense or defense stat has that unit left unscored, rather than giving the missing weight to the other stats. Overall needs only finished games, so a team that has not played is not scored.

Each score is worked out first, then passes through a fixed curve that Overall, Offense and Defense share. The curve converts each score on its own, without looking at any other team's score. Overall rates every team against the whole league and its opponents, so it can move when other teams play. Offense and Defense do not. 0 and 100 sit at the very ends of the scale, so they are very rare. Ranks and ties follow the scores before the curve: equal scores are ordered by win percentage, then team name. Filters never change scores or ranks. The numbers in a team's scorecard breakdown stay on their own scales, so they add up to Overall before the curve, not to the Overall shown.

Score labels show whole numbers where they can. When two scores would share a whole number, one keeps a decimal so the order stays clear. Equal scores share a label. Only the labels are rounded, never the scores, meters or ranks.

Points include defensive and special-teams scores. Team passer rating is the traditional passer rating, not ESPN's QBR. Net yards per play counts passing yards after sacks plus rushing yards, over every offensive play. Offense and defense grade plain season numbers, and only Overall adjusts for the opponents played. Analyst opinions play no part.

Scoring strength starts from each team's average points margin and accounts for every opponent's strength in one league-wide calculation. Teams with few games are pulled toward average, which keeps early-season numbers steady. Each point of adjusted margin is worth 3 points on a strength scale centered on 50 and kept between 0 and 100. A team's scorecard shows these inputs and both halves of Overall.

The even split between results and scoring margin, and the 3 points per point of margin, are descriptive choices, not predictions. There is no home-field or injury adjustment, and the scores are not built or tested to forecast games.
